An Independent Voice for Young People in County Durham
Introduction
Durham Children and Young People's Council is set up to give young people the opportunity to voice their opinions and make changes in issues that affect them. We are a caring and democratic organisation that hopes to give young people a sense of achievement. We believe equal opportunities for young people should always be upheld in an appropriate manner.
DCYPC is based on fun and friendship and strives to improve the future for other young people in County Durham.
We follow the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. These are a set of rights that all young people are entitled to. We work to one particular section that says that: ''Whenever decisions are made that affect young people you have to the right to have your say and the adults have to take your opinion seriously.''
Over DCYPC's time we have worked on a number of projects that are important to young people in County Durham. We are currently working on raising awareness about youth homelessness and campaigning to get free access to leisure facilities for young homeless people. In the past we have worked with the police, jointly producing a training pack, produced an anti-bullying video and a guide on how to set up a youth forum.
DCYPC supports trade justice. We have been raising awareness about fairtrade in schools and amongst other young people and went to Edinburgh on July 2nd to add our voices to the Make Poverty History rally.
Why not come along to our meetings? We meet on Tuesday nights between 6pm - 8pm, at Mill House, Gilesgate in Durham. We will even pay your travel expenses and free food! Need more information - then contact us on 0191 3849745.
